The National Theatre at 50 Years on
Monday, November 18, 2013
It has been 50 years since Sir Laurence Olivier engaged me to be his lighting designer at Chichester and the Old Vic with the birth of the National Theatre Company. What stunning productions and what adventures unfolded. Theatre Consultant to the South Bank complex, designing the stages and all their equipment, the backstage planning, and even the mighty drum revolve and the iconic flytower above it. Also of course the Cottesloe, that has become a model of intimate flexible theatre about the world.
The event has been splendidly celebrated by a series of platform performances at the NT, by the 2013 PLASA Show, and an epic performance in the Olivier Theatre, directed by Nick Hytner, to be shown on world-wide TV on November 30.
